Participants will travel the length of Utah studying the American Indians, Mormon pioneers, miners, and diverse groups of people who have shaped Utah’s history and culture. Participants will focus on the different groups of people who have called Utah home, considering how they arrived here and how they have used the land. The trails and tracks that these people traveled, so related to the geography of Utah, will be explored. Using artifacts, primary sources, and geographic sites, participants will study the Mormon pioneers, American Indians, miners, and diverse groups of people who have shaped Utah’s history and culture. The interactions, conflict, and cooperation between different groups of Utahns will be studied. Highlights will include a three-day float trip on the San Juan River, exploring Ancestral Puebloan archeological sites; following the Mormon Trail from Fort Bridger into the Salt Lake Valley; and standing with Shoshone leaders on the ravine overlooking the Bear River Massacre site. You will not teach Utah History the same way after this adventure.
